Start with Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. It alternates two strands — a young man in a Lima radio station and the increasingly deranged soap operas written by his colleague — and it is the most purely enjoyable novel this author produced. It also introduces, in a form that never becomes a chore, the structural habit that governs everything else he wrote: separate narrative lines, cut against each other, converging late.
The obvious alternative start is Conversation in the Cathedral, widely held to be his masterpiece. Do not begin there. It opens with hundreds of pages of interleaved dialogue across four time frames with minimal signposting, and it is the single most common reason people decide they do not get on with him. It is a magnificent book and it is a terrible first book.
Stage one: the accessible novels
Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter first. Captain Pantoja and the Special Service second if you want more of the same register — a military logistics officer assigned an absurd task, executed in reports, memoranda and transcripts, and very funny about institutional language.
Time of the Hero, published as The Time of the Hero, was his first novel and remains one of his best entry points: cadets at a Lima military academy, a stolen exam paper, a death. The academy is said to have burned copies. It is shorter and more direct than what came after, and it already contains the whole worldview.
Stage two: the major novels
Conversation in the Cathedral is the one to reach after two or three others. Two men talk in a bar and the conversation opens outward into a portrait of Peru under a dictatorship, told through dozens of interlocking lives. Give it a hundred pages before judging it; the technique that seems perverse at the start becomes transparent once you stop trying to track every thread.
The Green House is the other structurally demanding one — five storylines in the Peruvian jungle and desert, deliberately unmarked transitions. Most readers find it the hardest of his books and not the most rewarding. It is skippable in a way Conversation in the Cathedral is not.
War of the End of the World, published as The War of the End of the World, is the one many readers name as his greatest. It leaves Peru for the Canudos rebellion in the Brazilian backlands, and it is a straightforwardly told historical epic — no puzzles, no interleaving, just a very large story about millenarians, republicans and the mutual incomprehension that gets everyone killed. If the experimental novels are not for you, this is the one to read anyway.
Stage three: the later work
The Storyteller is short, strange and the best of the late novels: an argument about whether an Amazonian people should be left alone, told partly in the voice of a wandering tribal storyteller. The dream of the celt fictionalises Roger Casement, who exposed atrocities in the Congo and the Amazon before being executed for Irish republicanism. The bad girl is a long romantic obsession across several decades and cities, and it divides readers sharply.
The most conspicuous absence from this path is his late masterpiece about the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, The Feast of the Goat, which many would place second only to Conversation in the Cathedral. It is missing from our catalogue rather than from his bibliography — seek it out.
The nonfiction
Fish in the Water, published as A Fish in the Water, alternates a memoir of childhood with an account of his own unsuccessful run for the Peruvian presidency in 1990, and it is the most direct statement of a political position that moved substantially across his career and remains contested in Latin America. Letters to a Young Novelist is a short book of craft advice, best read last, since its examples assume you know the novels.
Where to stop
Three books gives you the author: Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter, Time of the Hero, and either Conversation in the Cathedral or War of the End of the World depending on whether you want the difficult masterpiece or the readable one. The reading path lays out the full sequence with notes per stage.
