Human factors has an unusual literature: at one end sit design books that sell in airports, at the other sit engineering textbooks and anthropometric data tables, and the two barely resemble each other. Both are the same discipline. A reader who starts at the textbook end learns formulas without the intuition that makes them worth applying; a reader who stops at the popular end has opinions about door handles and no idea how a workstation is actually specified.
The order below runs popular to technical for that reason. It also separates cognitive human factors — attention, workload, error — from physical ergonomics, which is about bodies, reach envelopes and musculoskeletal load. Practitioners need both, but they are different literatures with different methods, and blending them early is confusing.
The design classics
The Psychology of Everyday Things by Donald Norman is the foundational popular text and the source of affordances, mappings and forcing functions as everyday vocabulary. One note before you buy: this is the 1988 original title of the book now sold as The Design of Everyday Things, so make sure you are not purchasing the same work twice. Designing for people by Henry Dreyfuss came earlier, in 1955, and is the industrial designer's version — the book that put measured human dimensions at the centre of product design, written by the man who designed the Bell telephone. It is a period piece and still the clearest statement of the discipline's premise.
Designing with the Mind in Mind by Jeff Johnson is the bridge: applied cognitive psychology written for interface designers, explaining why the usability rules work rather than just listing them. Read it after Norman and before the textbooks.
The engineering core
An introduction to human factors engineering by Christopher Wickens and colleagues is the standard undergraduate text, covering displays, controls, workload, automation and error in a single volume. Human factors in engineering and design by Mark Sanders and Ernest McCormick is the older standard and still widely assigned; it overlaps substantially with Wickens, so choose one rather than reading both unless you are teaching the subject. Introduction to ergonomics by R. S. Bridger is the physical-ergonomics counterpart — biomechanics, posture, manual handling, workplace layout — and is the one to read if your interest is workstations and injury rather than displays and attention.
Be warned that all three are textbooks with textbook pricing, and current editions cost several times what the popular books do. Previous editions are substantially cheaper and, for a general reader, essentially as useful.
The reference shelf
Bodyspace by Stephen Pheasant is the standard anthropometric reference — the measured distribution of human body dimensions and how to design for a percentile range rather than an average. The measure of man and woman, from Alvin Tilley and Henry Dreyfuss Associates, is the illustrated version of the same data and the more usable of the two at a drawing board.
Engineering Psychology and Human Performance, Wickens again, is the deeper treatment of the cognitive side — attention, decision making, mental workload — and is where the introductory text's chapters get their real argument. Human Factors Methods by Neville Stanton is a practitioner's catalogue of techniques: task analysis, error prediction, workload assessment, each with a worked procedure. Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics, edited by Gavriel Salvendy, closes the path as the field's reference volume. It runs to well over a thousand pages and nobody reads it through; you consult it.
