Start with Berserk Deluxe Volume 1 and read the fourteen Deluxe hardcovers in order. Say the edition out loud before you buy anything, because this is where readers lose their place: Dark Horse's Deluxe hardcovers each collect three of the original Japanese volumes, so Deluxe 1 is originals 1 to 3, Deluxe 2 is 4 to 6, and so on. If you own the older singles, multiply by three. Mixing the two numbering systems is the single most common way to end up rereading two hundred pages or skipping them.
Two things belong at the front rather than buried in a later section.
First, the content. Berserk contains sustained graphic violence from its opening chapters and repeated depictions of sexual violence, including one extended sequence that a large number of readers stop at permanently. It is not incidental and it is not brief. Whether that is a reason to avoid the series is your call, not this guide's; what would be dishonest is letting you find out on page 900.
Second, there is no ending. Kentaro Miura died in 2021 with the series unfinished. The manga has since been continued from his notes by his longtime assistant, but that material is not in this edition and this path does not pretend otherwise. You are reading toward a stop, not a conclusion.
The order controversy: do you start at volume 1?
A common piece of advice is to skip the opening arc and begin with the Golden Age flashback, on the grounds that the first Deluxe volume is tonally unrepresentative — an episodic demon-hunting revenge story with a much cruder edge than what follows — and that the flashback is where the actual story starts.
Read it in published order anyway. The opening arc is deliberately withholding: it shows you a man with a scar, a brand and a grudge, and the entire emotional weight of the Golden Age depends on you having met that version of him first and not understood him. Beginning with the flashback turns the best-constructed reveal in the series into a straight chronological drama. The opening is the weaker material; it is also load-bearing.
Deluxe 1 to 3: the Black Swordsman and into the past
Around 2,100 pages. Volume 1 is the crude one; by Deluxe 2 the flashback has begun and the series has become something else entirely.
Deluxe 4 and 5: the Golden Age
The heart of the work, and the reason people press it on friends. Do not break Deluxe 5 across many short sittings — the final arc of the flashback is one sustained movement designed to be unbearable in sequence. A specific warning for this stage: the closing sequence of Berserk Deluxe Volume 5 is the most extreme material in the series, containing graphic sexual violence and mass death. Decide in advance whether you want to read it. It is also the sequence the whole rest of the series exists to answer.
Deluxe 6 to 8: Conviction
Berserk Deluxe Volume 7 is the slowest reading so far and benefits from a chapter at a time; Berserk Deluxe Volume 6 and Berserk Deluxe Volume 8 both move fast. The Tower of Conviction material adds sustained torture and religious cruelty to everything already listed above.
Deluxe 9 to 14: the Journey and the late volumes
Berserk Deluxe Volume 9 is talkier and lighter, Berserk Deluxe Volume 10 widens the map, Berserk Deluxe Volume 11 converges. From there the pacing becomes unhurried and the art reaches its most detailed. Read Berserk Deluxe Volume 12, Berserk Deluxe Volume 13 and Berserk Deluxe Volume 14 slowly; there is nothing waiting on the other side.
Where to stop
The end of Berserk Deluxe Volume 5 is a genuine stopping point and a lot of readers take it — the Golden Age is a complete tragedy in itself, and everything after it is a long response to it. If you want more than that, the next natural pause is the end of Conviction. Otherwise read to volume 14 knowing what it is. More comics reading orders are on Discover.
