Building a sauna is a small, well-bounded construction project with an unusual amount of hidden knowledge attached to it. The physical structure is straightforward — an insulated, vapour-sealed room with a heater and benches — but the details that separate a good sauna from a hot shed are almost all traditional rather than obvious. Bench height relative to the stones, ventilation placement, wood species, how the vapour barrier meets the door: none of it is intuitive.

What a sauna actually is
Start with Sauna - the Finnish bath by H. J. Viherjuuri. It is the classic cultural account — the history, the social role, the ritual, and the standards that Finnish practice takes for granted. It will change your design assumptions before you draw anything: how hot, how humid, how the löyly should feel, and why the benches sit where they do.
The build
Then Sauna by Rob Roy, which is the practical construction manual: siting, foundations, framing, insulation and vapour barrier, heater selection, bench layout, and the wood choices that matter because they contact skin at high temperature. Roy writes for owner-builders and covers several construction approaches rather than prescribing one.
Read it with two things beside you. First, your heater's own installation manual — clearances to combustibles are non-negotiable and vary by unit. Second, your local building and electrical code. An electric heater is a substantial circuit and a wood-burning stove involves a chimney; in most jurisdictions both require permits and inspection, and some require licensed work. Books inform the project, they do not substitute for a permit, an inspector or a qualified electrician.
The finish
Close with Taunton's complete illustrated guide to finishing by Jeff Jewitt. This is a general woodworking finishing reference, and its role here is partly to tell you what not to do: most conventional film finishes are wrong inside a hot room, where they can soften, off-gas or trap moisture. Jewitt gives you the underlying chemistry of finishes and wood movement, so you can reason about what belongs on the exterior, the door and the changing area — and why interior benches are usually left bare or treated only with a sauna-specific oil.
What the books will not settle
Sauna building has live disagreements — electric versus wood-fired, foil versus other vapour barriers, cedar versus aspen or thermally modified wood — and enthusiasts hold these views strongly. The books above give you the reasoning; the modern sauna-building forums give you current product experience. Use both, and let your climate and code decide the rest.
