Set theory is both the informal language everyone uses and a rigorous axiomatic subject, and conflating the two causes confusion. A good path starts with naive set theory as a working vocabulary, then moves deliberately to the axioms, where the paradoxes force precision, and reaches ordinals, cardinals, and the transfinite once you accept why the axioms are needed.
