Relativity rewards a careful climb. Special relativity — time dilation, spacetime, E=mc² — has to be intuitive before general relativity's curved spacetime and gravity will land. Popular books build the picture and the thought experiments; the more technical treatments supply the geometry that makes it rigorous.
