Wireless communications is digital communications plus one enormous complication: the channel changes while you are using it. Fading, diversity, adaptive modulation, OFDM and MIMO are all responses to that single fact. Which is why this path does not start with a wireless book. It builds the digital communication background first, because a reader who cannot draw a matched filter or explain intersymbol interference will not survive chapter four of Rappaport, let alone Tse and Viswanath.
The prerequisites are real and non-negotiable: probability and random processes, Fourier analysis and linear systems, and enough linear algebra to be comfortable with an eigendecomposition before the multi-antenna stage. One further warning applies to almost every book below — these are long-lived textbooks and our catalogue records skew to early editions. Buy current, and read the note attached to each one.
First, digital communication
Communication systems is Simon Haykin's undergraduate on-ramp: analogue through digital, signal space, and noise, assuming only signals and systems. Start here if your last communications course was a while ago. Our record is the 1978 first edition of a book now in its fifth.
Digital communications is John Proakis, the graduate reference sitting underneath everything else here: optimum receivers, signal space, equalisation, and the error-probability derivations the wireless texts cite rather than repeat. Read the first six chapters before you open a wireless book. Our record is the 1983 first edition — the first of five — and the fifth, with Masoud Salehi, is the one in use.
Digital Communication is Lee and Messerschmitt, and it is the clearest treatment anywhere of synchronisation, timing recovery and equalisation: the parts of a receiver that Proakis states and that real hardware lives or dies by. A companion, not a substitute. Fundamentals of digital communication is Upamanyu Madhow's compact modern alternative, written from a complex-baseband viewpoint that maps directly onto how a software radio is built. If you want one book rather than a reference, read Madhow instead of Proakis — and read it last in this stage either way.
The standard first wireless course
Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice is Theodore Rappaport's, and it is still the best book on propagation and channel measurement specifically: the empirical models a link budget actually uses. Our record is the 1996 first edition; the second edition of 2002 is far more widely taught and a third has since appeared.
Principles of Mobile Communication is Gordon Stuber's rigorous counterpart — the same territory with the statistical channel models derived rather than asserted, and much stronger on cellular design and interference. Take it as the second pass, not the first.
The graduate texts
Two of these share a display title and are not the same book, so check the author when ordering. Wireless Communications is Andrea Goldsmith's: the graduate course text and the most systematic treatment of capacity under fading, adaptive modulation and diversity combining. This is the one to work through in full. Wireless communications is Andreas Molisch's, the broadest of the three, covering channel modelling, standards and the air interfaces of deployed systems at the cost of Goldsmith's depth on capacity. Use it as the encyclopaedia beside Goldsmith's course; our record is the first edition and later ones add LTE and beyond.
Fundamentals of wireless communication, by David Tse and Pramod Viswanath, is the summit of the path and the reason it is ordered this way: it derives the subject from information theory, and the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff it introduced is the concept the field organises itself around. Do not attempt it before Goldsmith.
Antennas, coding and the system
MIMO wireless communications is the dedicated multi-antenna volume — space-time codes, spatial multiplexing, receiver algorithms, and the channel models MIMO performance depends on. Read it after Tse, who supplies the reason each technique exists.
Error control coding needs a paragraph of its own. Lin and Costello is the standard coding reference, but turbo and LDPC codes — which is what every modern wireless standard actually uses — appear only in the second edition. Our record is the 1982 first edition. This is the one place on the path where the edition changes the content rather than the polish: buy the first and the subject you came for is not in the book.
Antenna theory is Balanis, the standard antenna text, and its array chapters are the prerequisite for taking beamforming seriously instead of treating it as a matrix; our record is the first edition and the fourth is current. Wireless Communications and Networking, by Jon Mark and Weihua Zhuang, closes the path by stepping up from the radio link to medium access, resource allocation, mobility management and cross-layer design — what all those link-level results were for.
