Start with The warded man and read the five main books in publication order. There is no chronological alternative worth arguing about, no prequel, and no other entry point. Demons rise at nightfall, humanity survives behind warded circles, and three children in three villages respond to that differently.
The first thing to know before you buy: in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth the same novel was published as The Painted Man, and our catalogue holds it as a separate record. Same book, different cover, different title. Do not buy both.
The five-book arc
The warded man is book one. The desert spear is book two and the volume that decides whether the series is for you, because it opens by going back and retelling a large stretch of book one from the antagonist's side. Readers expecting a straight continuation find it jarring; readers who know it is coming tend to name it the best thing in the series. That rewind-and-retell structure is the series' basic move from here on, and knowing it in advance stops it feeling like a mistake.
The Daylight War is book three, where the Krasian and Northern claims to prophecy collide and Inevera gets the retrospective treatment Jardir got in book two. It ends on the hardest cliffhanger in the sequence. The Skull Throne is book four and the one most often called the weakest — the two leads are largely off the page while succession politics play out — but it sets up everything the finale needs, so it is not skippable. The core is book five, the longest volume, the only one that goes underground, and the end of the arc. Read it directly after The Skull Throne, which stops mid-motion.
Content note
The Demon Cycle contains graphic sexual violence, including rape, across the main sequence. It is not incidental — it is bound into several major characters' storylines and into how the Krasian culture is depicted. That is a fact about the books, and worth knowing before book two.
Where the novellas go
None of the three are required. The Great Bazaar & Brayan's Gold collects the two Arlen novellas in one volume, which is the tidier way to buy them; both sit chronologically inside The warded man, so read them any time after book one, or after book five without losing anything. Messenger's Legacy is Briar's story, sitting between The desert spear and The Daylight War, and is the one side story that meaningfully improves a main-series character — read it before book three if you read it at all. Barren is Selia Barren's novella, published after The core and containing material that spoils the main arc, so it genuinely has to come last.
The sequel duology
The Desert Prince opens the Nightfall Saga fifteen years on, following the children of the Demon Cycle protagonists. It is written to be readable without the first series, and that claim is technically true, but the emotional weight of nearly every scene depends on knowing who these people's parents were and what they did. Read the Demon Cycle first. The Hidden Queen continues directly and is currently the last book in the sequence.
Publication order versus anything else
This is one of the rare long fantasy series where the order question has a boring answer, and it is worth saying so rather than manufacturing a controversy. Publication order is story order for the five main novels. The novellas are the only movable pieces, and the only rule that matters there is that Barren comes after The core. Everything else is preference.
