Start with Moon Called. It is the first book Patricia Briggs published in this world, it introduces Mercy — a Volkswagen mechanic who is also a shapeshifting coyote — and it establishes the werewolf pack politics that every later book runs on. There is no prequel and no better door.
The harder question is the spin-off. Alpha and Omega follows Charles and Anna, and it is not optional in the way spin-offs usually are. Fair Game ends with a public declaration by the Marrok that changes the werewolves' standing with human government, and Frost Burned opens directly inside the fallout. Read Fair Game before Frost Burned, or the seventh Mercy book begins in a world you did not watch change.
The order to actually read them in
Interleaved by publication, which is also the internal chronology:
Moon Called, Blood Bound, Iron Kissed, then On the Prowl and Cry Wolf, then Bone Crossed, Hunting Ground, Silver Borne, River Marked, then Fair Game, Frost Burned, Night Broken, then Fire Touched and Silence Fallen.
If you want to keep the two series separate, the minimum viable version is: read the Mercy books straight through, but stop and read the Alpha and Omega books up to Fair Game before you open Frost Burned.
What On the Prowl actually is
On the Prowl is an anthology containing four novellas by four different writers. The one you need is Briggs's contribution, which is Anna and Charles's origin story and sets up everything Cry Wolf assumes. Buying it means buying three other authors' novellas alongside it; the novella has also been collected elsewhere in Briggs's own short fiction, so check what you already own before ordering.
What each strand is doing
The Mercy books are first-person urban fantasy with a mystery structure: a body or a disappearance, then Mercy pulling a thread until it reaches whichever supernatural faction is behind it. The through-line is the slow reorganisation of Mercy's relationship with the Columbia Basin pack and its Alpha, Adam.
Alpha and Omega is third-person, more romance-forward, and considerably more concerned with werewolf law and the Marrok's authority over it. That is why it matters to the main series: the political changes happen there.
The warning that matters
Iron Kissed contains a graphic rape of the narrator in its final act, and the aftermath is the emotional spine of the two books that follow. It arrives with no signalling in a series that until that point reads as fairly light urban fantasy, and readers routinely report being blindsided. Nothing about the plot requires you to read it cold.
Elsewhere the content is standard for the genre: a lot of violence, some of it against children in Fire Touched and Silence Fallen.
Where the catalogue stops
This list holds ten Mercy novels and four Alpha and Omega books. Both series continue past it. Storm Cursed, Smoke Bitten, Soul Taken and Winter Lost carry Mercy forward; Dead Heat, Burn Bright and Wild Sign carry Charles and Anna. The collection Shifting Shadows gathers the shorter pieces set in the same world. None of those are in our catalogue, so treat this as the first two-thirds rather than the complete run.
Where to stop, if you want to
River Marked is the natural resting place. It closes the long-running romance arc, it is a largely self-contained story built on Mercy's Blackfeet heritage rather than pack politics, and it reads like an ending. Everything after it is good, but it is more of the same shape.
