This curriculum takes a brand-new pickleball player from zero to competitive in four tightly sequenced stages. Each stage builds on the last — first establishing rules and basic mechanics, then developing the all-important soft game and dinking, then layering in strategy and court positioning, and finally addressing the physical side of longevity and injury prevention so you can keep improving without breaking down.

Foundations: Rules, Gear & First Strokes

Understand the rules, scoring, court layout, and fundamental strokes so you can play a real game confidently and speak the language of pickleball.

Study plan for this stage

Pace: 3–4 weeks, ~20–25 pages/day — read one chapter of "Pickleball Fundamentals" per session, pausing after each major section (rules, court, strokes) to review and take notes before moving on.

Practice
  • Court mapping: Draw the full pickleball court from memory — label the kitchen, service boxes, centerline, baselines, and net height at center vs. sidelines. Check it against the diagram in Pickleball Fundamentals.
  • Rules quiz: Write out 10 common game situations (e.g., ball lands on kitchen line during a serve, player steps into kitchen after a volley) and determine whether each is a fault or legal play using the rulebook chapter.
  • Serve practice (solo): Using a paddle and ball against a wall or on a court, practice 20 legal underhand serves focusing on contact point below the waist and diagonal placement. Count how many land in the correct service box.
  • Stroke shadow-swings: Without a ball, slowly rehearse the forehand groundstroke, backhand groundstroke, volley, and dink 15 times each — narrating your grip, stance, and swing path aloud to reinforce the mechanics from the book.
  • Score-calling drill: Watch 15–20 minutes of beginner pickleball on YouTube and call the score out loud before each serve, then verify against the players on screen.
  • Gear research exercise: Using the equipment chapter of Pickleball Fundamentals as your guide, visit a local sports store or browse online and evaluate three paddles — note their weight, material, and grip size, and write a one-paragraph justification for which you would choose as a beginner.

Practice

  • Wall Dink Practice: Find a wall and mark a target zone 34–36 inches high (net height). Continuously dink against the wall, aiming to keep every shot within the target band for sets of 20 consecutive hits before resting.
  • Cross-Court Dink Rally (Partner): With a partner, sustain a cross-court dink rally for as long as possible, counting consecutive shots. Set a beginner goal of 15 in a row, then 30. Focus on placement to the opponent's backhand side per Smart Pickleball's guidance.
  • Third-Shot Drop Simulation: From the baseline, feed yourself a mid-court ball (or have a partner toss) and practice the third-shot drop into the kitchen. Take 3 steps forward after each attempt to reinforce the habit of advancing to the line.
  • Kitchen Line Lateral Movement Drill: At the kitchen line, have a partner dink alternately to your forehand and backhand. Practice shuffling laterally without crossing your feet, keeping your paddle up and in front — reinforcing the positioning principles from Smart Pickleball.
  • Patience Game Scrimmage: Play points where you impose a personal rule — you are NOT allowed to speed up the ball or attack unless it rises above net height. Track how many unforced errors you eliminate compared to a normal free-play game, internalizing Carnot & Garrido's patience philosophy.
