Start at volume one and read straight through to volume twenty-three. Demon Slayer is a single serialised story that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2016 to 2020 and then stopped; there is no chronological alternative, no side series you need, and no clever entry point further in. The numbered volumes are the order.
Before anything else, an honest warning about this particular list. Our catalogue has usable English records for only seven of the twenty-three volumes: Demon slayer - kimetsu no yaiba vol. 1 through Demon slayer - kimetsu no yaiba vol. 4, then Demon Slayer - Kimetsu No Yaiba Vol. 7, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 8 and Demon Slayer : Kimetsu No Yaiba, Vol. 9 : Operation. Volumes five and six are missing, and so is everything from ten onward. This path is a starting point, not a complete run, and you will need to buy most of the series elsewhere. The cheapest way to do that is the complete twenty-three volume box set, which Viz sells as a single item and which is usually less per volume than buying them individually.
What the series is
Tanjiro Kamado comes home to find his family killed and his younger sister Nezuko turned into a demon. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps to find a cure for her and to kill the demon responsible, and the series follows his training, the Corps' elite swordsmen — the Hashira — and a long escalating war against Muzan Kibutsuji and the Twelve Kizuki. Koyoharu Gotouge wrote and drew it. The art is scratchier and less polished than the Ufotable anime that made the series a global phenomenon, and readers coming from the screen sometimes find that a disappointment; the storytelling and the emotional beats are the reason to read it.
What the volumes here cover
Volumes one to four take Tanjiro from the mountain where his family dies through Final Selection and into his first real assignments — the Asakusa encounter that establishes what Muzan is, and the drum-house case that introduces Zenitsu and Inosuke as permanent fixtures. Demon Slayer - Kimetsu No Yaiba Vol. 7 and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 8 are the Mugen Train arc, the section adapted as the record-breaking 2020 film, and the point where the series proves it will kill people you have come to like. Demon Slayer : Kimetsu No Yaiba, Vol. 9 : Operation opens the Entertainment District arc.
The gap between volumes four and seven
Volumes five and six are the Mount Natagumo arc and its aftermath: the spider family, the first Lower Moon fight, and the injuries that send Tanjiro and the others into recovery and then into the training that sets up Mugen Train. Skipping them is not viable. You will arrive at volume seven not knowing why half the cast is convalescing or who several returning characters are.
After volume nine
The remainder runs Entertainment District to its conclusion, then the Swordsmith Village arc, a short training interlude, the very long Infinity Castle arc that occupies most of the final third, and a two-volume ending. All of it is straightforwardly sequential. Buy one edition and stay in it — mixing single volumes with omnibus reprints is how people end up owning the same chapters twice.
Content notes and where to stop
The violence is graphic and frequent: decapitation is the standard method of killing a demon, dismemberment is routine, and children die on the page, including in the first chapter. The series has an ending and it is worth reaching; there is no natural stopping point earlier, though readers who lose patience often do so in the Infinity Castle arc, which is a near-continuous fight sequence running many volumes.
